English Renaissance theatre, also known as early modern English theatre, refers to the theatre of England, largely based in London, which occurred between 1567, when the first English theatre 'The Red Lion' was opened; and the closure of the theatres in 1642. It includes the drama of William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and many other famous playwrights.

Als Elisabethanisches Theater bezeichnet man gemeinhin das Theater der englischen Renaissance unter Königin Elisabeth I. (reg. 1559–1603) und ihrem Nachfolger Jakob I. (reg. 1603–1625).

Le théâtre élisabéthain désigne les pièces de théâtre écrites et interprétées en Angleterre pendant le règne de la reine Élisabeth I (1559 - 1603).

Elisabetansk teater syftar på den engelska dramatik som skrevs och framfördes mellan reformationen och nedstängningen av teatrarna 1642. Den kan även kallas tidigmodern engelsk teater eller engelsk renässansteater. Till den elisabetanska teatern räknas bland annat Christopher Marlowes, William Shakespeares och Ben Jonsons verk.

Teatr elżbietański - za jego umowną datę narodzin przyjmuje się rok 1576. Wtedy to bowiem przedsiębiorca James Burbage wybudował pod Londynem pierwszy gmach przeznaczony wyłącznie do prezentacji widowisk teatralnych. Nazwał go The Theatre i rozpoczął wystawianie pierwszych sztuk. Wkrótce pojawiły się dwa kolejne teatry – The Curtain i The Rose - a po nich przyszły następne (Globe Theatre).
