End-Use Energy Consumption1

Primary end-use energy consumption is the sum of fossil fuel consumption by the four end-use sectors (residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation) and generation of hydroelectric power by nonelectric utilities. Net end-use energy consumption includes electric utility sales to those sectors but excludes electrical system energy losses. Total end-use energy consumption includes both electric utility sales to the four end-use sectors and electrical system energy losses. (DOE3)
