The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) is a free, online collaborative encyclopedia intended to document all of the 1.9 million living species known to science. It is compiled from existing databases and from contributions by experts and non-experts throughout the world. It aims to build one "infinitely expandable" page for each species, including video, sound, images, graphics, as well as text. In addition, the Encyclopedia incorporates content from the Biodiversity Heritage Library, which digitizes millions of pages of printed literature from the world's major natural history libraries. The project was initially backed by a US$50 million funding commitment, led by the MacArthur Foundation and the Sloan Foundation, who provided US$20 million and US$5 million, respectively. The additional US$25 million came from five cornerstone institutions - the Field Museum, Harvard University, the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and the Smithsonian Institution. Today, participating institutions and individual donors continue to support EOL through financial contributions.

Die Encyclopedia of Life (kurz EOL, deutsch: Enzyklopädie des Lebens) ist eine Online-Enzyklopädie, welche von Fachleuten erarbeitete Einträge über sämtliche bekannte Arten von Lebewesen beinhalten wird. Sie wird frei zugänglich sein. Viele Einträge werden Video- und Audiodateien, Bilder, Grafiken und Texte enthalten.

Encyclopedia of Life (w skrócie EOL, Encyklopedia Życia) - współtworzona przez wielu fachowców, anglojęzyczna, internetowa bezpłatna encyklopedia, której zadaniem jest zebranie informacji o wszystkich opisanych przez naukę gatunkach. Encyklopedia rozpoczęła swoje działanie 26 lutego 2008 r. z 30 000 hasłami. Olbrzymie zainteresowanie (11,5 mln trafień w ciągu 5,5 godz.) spowodowało przeciążenie serwisu i konieczne było przez kilka dni ograniczenie jego funkcjonalności.

Encyclopedia of Life ('Encyclopedie van het Leven') is een omvangrijk internetinitiatief van de Verenigde Staten alsmede van Europese en andere landen. De nog op te zetten encyclopedie gaat een wereldwijde soortenbank vormen. De benodigde gegevensverzameling gaat zo'n 10 jaar duren en circa 12,5 miljoen dollar kosten. De encyclopedie wordt gebaseerd op de wiki-technologie.
