Isaz is the reconstructed Proto-Germanic name of the i-rune , meaning "ice". In the Younger Futhark it is called Iss in Icelandic and isa in Old Norse. As rune of the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, it is called is.The corresponding Gothic letter is i, named eis.

Eis ist gefrorenes Wasser und einer der Aggregatzustände von Wasser (H2O), das sich im Allgemeinen bei Null Grad Celsius bildet. Die Wissenschaft von Formen, Auftreten und Eigenschaften von Eis und Schnee nennt man Glaziologie.Eis tritt in den verschiedensten Erscheinungsformen auf, vom Hagelkorn über den Eiswürfel bis zum Gletscher. Es ist leichter als Wasser, bildet an der Wasseroberfläche Eisdecken und schwimmt in Form von Eisschollen und Eisbergen.Physikalisch gesehen ist Eis ein transparenter, kristalliner Festkörper. Eisblöcke bestehen aber meist aus vielen, von feinen Luftbläschen durchdrungenen, Eiskristallen und erscheinen daher durch vielfache Lichtbrechung weiß. Als chemischer Stoff zeichnet es sich durch einige besondere Eigenschaften aus, die auf den Anomalien des Wassers beruhen.
