Edward Grey

Edward Grey, 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon KG, PC, DL (25 April 1862 –  7 September 1933), better known as Sir Edward Grey was a British politician and ornithologist.Grey was the eldest of the seven children of Colonel George Henry Grey and Harriet Jane Pearson, daughter of Charles Pearson. His grandfather Sir George Grey, 2nd Baronet, of Fallodon, was also a prominent Liberal politician, while his great-grandfather Sir George Grey, 1st Baronet, of Fallodon, was the second son of Charles Grey, 1st Earl Grey and the younger brother of Prime Minister Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey. Growing up in the old Whiggish tradition, Grey was educated at Winchester College and at Balliol College, Oxford. He was elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal in 1885 (serving Berwick-upon-Tweed), having previously succeeded to his grandfather's baronetcy in 1882. He served under Lord Rosebery as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in Gladstone's last government, from 1892 to 1895. During the Second Boer War (1899 - 1902), when the Liberals split between radical Pro-Boers and Liberal Imperialists, Grey stood decidedly on the side of the Imperialists like Rosebery and Herbert Henry Asquith.

Berühmtheit erlangte Grey vor allem in seiner Funktion als britischer Außenminister in den Jahren vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg und in der ersten Hälfte des Ersten Weltkrieges (1905-1916).

Pierwszy wicehrabia Grey of Fallodon (od 1916), polityk brytyjski, minister spraw zagranicznych, bratanek Charlesa premiera Wielkiej Brytanii z lat 1830-1834.Karierę polityczną rozpoczął w 1885 jako liberalny członek Izby Gmin. W roku 1905 został ministrem spraw zagranicznych, przeprowadził wzmocnienie ententy z Francją i zbliżenie do Rosji (1907). Latem 1914 roku próbował skłonić Niemcy do wycofania wojsk z Belgii. Wobec niepowodzenia tych prób, opowiedział się stanowczo za realizacją zobowiązań sojuszniczych, czym doprowadził Wielką Brytanię do udziału w I wojnie światowej. Cesarz Wilhelm II Hohenzollern uznał go potem za głównego wroga Niemiec i osobę odpowiedzialną za przekształcenie wojny w konflikt światowy.

Edward Grey (25 april, 1862 – 7 september, 1933) was een Brits politicus ten tijde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog en ornitholoog.Edward Grey wordt eind 1905, nadat het Britse conservatieve kabinet plaats maakt voor de Liberalen, de nieuwe minister van Buitenlandse Zaken. Hij was sterk anti-Duits. Samen met de Franse Generaal Boisdeffre, Raymond Poincaré en Theophile Delcassé en de Russische Generaal Obruchev, Serge Sazonov en Alexander Iswolsky behoorde hij tot de kerngroep die verantwoordelijk is voor het creëren van de 1e wereldoorlog.
