Edom

Edom is a name given to Esau in the Hebrew Bible, as well as to the nation descending from him. The nation's name in Assyrian was Udumi; in Syriac, ܐܕܘܡ; in Greek, Ἰδουμαία (Idoumaía); in Latin, Idumæa or Idumea.The Edomite people were a Semitic-speaking tribal group inhabiting the Negev Desert and the Arabah valley of what is now southern Israel and adjacent Jordan. The region has much reddish sandstone, which may have given rise to the name "Edom". The nation of Edom is known to have existed back to the 8th or 9th century BCE, and the Bible dates it back several centuries further. Recent archeological evidence may indicate an Edomite nation as long ago as the 11th century BCE, but the topic is controversial. The nation ceased to exist with the Jewish-Roman Wars.

Édom est un peuple mentionné dans la Bible, aujourd'hui disparu de l'actuelle terre d'Israël. Son ancêtre fondateur est Esaü, frère de Jacob (Israël). Ennemi historique d'Israël avec Moab et Ammon, il est pourtant appelé à appartenir à l'assemblée d'Israël dès la troisième génération, contrairement aux deux derniers. Il est allégoriquement identifié dans la tradition juive avec l'empire romain, et plus tard, avec la chrétienté.

Der Name Edom (hebr. ) bezeichnet sowohl einen Stammesverband, der seit der späten Eisenzeit östlich der Jordansenke siedelte, als auch das von diesem bewohnte Land selbst. Zusammen mit den Aramäern, Midianitern, Israeliten und Joktanitern werden die in der Bibel erwähnten Edomiter zu den Hebräern gerechnet.

Idumea (łac. Idumaea, hebr. Edom - czerwony) kraina historyczna na południu Izraela, pierwotnie ciągnąca się aż do Morza Czerwonego. Od VI wieku p.n.e. ograniczona do okolic Hebronu i wzgórz między Morzem Martwym, a Morzem Śródziemnym. Zamieszkana przez Idumejczyków (Edomitów), będącym plemieniem o semickim rodowodzie.

Edom (ebraico: אֱדוֹם, Edom, ʾĔḏôm, cioè "rosso") è uno dei nomi dato a Esaù nella Bibbia e, di conseguenza, alla nazione che sarebbe discesa da lui. L'etnonimo, in lingua assira, era Udumi; in siriaco ܐܕܘܡ; in greco, Ἰδουμαία (Idoumaía); in latino Idumaea, o Idumea.Il popolo edomita parlava una lingua semitica e costituiva un gruppo tribale che abitava il deserto del Negev e il Wadi ʿAraba, che si estende a sud di Israele e alla confinante Giordania. La regione presenta vaste estensioni di terreno ricoperte da pietre rossastre, che possono aver dato il nome "Edom" all'area. La nazione di Edom è nota fin dall'VIII-IX secolo a.C., e la Bibbia lo ricorda come colà insediato da molti secoli prima. Recenti scoperte archeologiche sono in grado di mostrare una nazione edomita almeno nell'XI secolo a.C., ma la questione rimane discussa. Tale nazione cessò d'esistere nel periodo delle Guerre giudaiche di Roma.
