The Edinburgh Festival Fringe (The Fringe) is the world's largest arts festival, with the 2011 event spanning 25 days totalling over 2,500 international shows from 60 nations in 258 venues. Established in 1947 as an alternative to the Edinburgh International Festival, it takes place annually in Scotland's capital, in the month of August. The Fringe is a showcase for the performing arts, particularly theatre and comedy (which has seen substantial growth in recent years), although dance and music are also represented. In 2009, 35% of shows were comedy and 28% theatrical productions. Theatrical productions range from the classics of ancient Greece, William Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett to modern works. In 2009, 37% of shows were having their world premiere.

De Edinburgh Fringe (officieel de Edinburgh Festival Fringe of kortweg The Fringe) is het grootste kunstfestival ter wereld: 1.697.293 verkochte kaartjes in 2007. The Fringe is ontstaan als een alternatief voor het Edinburgh International Festival en vindt jaarlijks, gedurende drie weken in augustus, plaats in de Schotse hoofdstad, naast een zestiental andere kunst- en cultuurfestivals, gezamenlijk bekend als het Edinburgh Festival. De Fringe trekt voornamelijk podiumkunsten aan, vooral drama en comedy (60%), daarnaast zijn muziek, musicals en opera belangrijk (22%). Verder zijn er dans, mime en acrobaten (vaak als straattheater), kindertheater en tentoonstellingen. De dramavoorstellingen strekken zich uit van de oude Grieken via Shakespeare en Samuel Beckett tot avant-gardistisch toneel. Toch is er geen selectie-comité of jury, die ergens toestemming voor moet geven, elk optreden is dus mogelijk (U kunt zich nog opgeven): de Fringe staat er daardoor om bekend een proeftuin te zijn voor experimenteel werk, dat op een formeler festival geen kans maakt. De organisatie, in handen van de Festival Fringe Society, beperkt zich niet alleen tot het publiceren van het programmaboekje en de verkoop van kaartjes maar begeleidt en adviseert ook de artiesten.
