For the cardinal direction see East, for other uses see East (disambiguation) The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST, internal designation HT-7U) is an experimental superconducting tokamak magnetic fusion energy reactor in Hefei, the capital city of Anhui Province, in eastern China. The experiment is being conducted by the Hefei-based Institute of Plasma Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The project was proposed in 1996 and approved in 1998. According to a 2003 schedule, buildings and site facilities were to be constructed by 2003, and tokamak assembly to take place from 2003 through 2005.

East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise.The etymology of east is from a Proto-Indo-European language word for dawn. Cf. Latin aurora and Greek eōs. Eostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal point.By convention, an ordinary terrestrial map is oriented so the right side is east. This convention dates from the Renaissance. Many medieval maps were oriented with the Orient (the East) east at the top, which is the source of the the verb .

Begriff Der Osten (vom althochdt. ostan "östlich") ist die in Richtung der Erdrotation verlaufende Himmelsrichtung und wird kulturhistorisch mit dem Sonnenaufgang assoziiert. Der Begriff ist wurzelverwandt mit griechisch eos und lateinisch aurora. Beides bedeutet "Morgenröte". Interessant ist, dass die frühen Landkarten nicht genordet, sondern geostet = orientiert (!) waren (von oriens = Osten).

L'est o oriente o levante è uno dei quattro punti o direzioni cardinali. È opposto all'ovest e perpendicolare a nord e sud.Per un osservatore ubicato sulla superficie terrestre, l'est è la direzione sull'orizzonte indicante il punto dal quale sorge il Sole agli equinozi. Detto anche Oriente o Levante.Il termine "L'Est" spesso si riferisce alle nazioni orientali. Quando viene usato in questo senso può, a seconda del contesto, riferirsi a Medio Oriente, Europa Orientale, Estremo Oriente Sud-est Asiatico, o all'Asia in generale. Questo significato della parola si fonde con quello di società orientale.
