Enabling Grids for E-sciencE (EGEE) is project funded by the
European Commission's
Sixth Framework Programme through Directorate F: Emerging Technologies and Infrastructures, of the
Directorate-General for Information Society and Media. It connects more than 70 institutions in 27 European countries to construct a multi-science
Grid infrastructure for the
European Research Area. Building on recent developments in Grid Technology and earlier test-bed projects such as EU DataGrid, its main aims are:To build a secure, reliable and robust Grid infrastructureTo reengineer a light-weight middleware solution, gLite, specifically intended to be used by many different scientific disciplinesTo attract, engage and support a wide range of users from science and industry, and provide them with extensive technical and training support.

Le projet EGEE (de l'anglais Enabling Grids for E-sciencE, c'est-à-dire, validation de grille pour l'e-Science) a été conçu par le sixième programme-cadre de la
Commission européenne par la direction F: Infrastructures et Technologies Emergentes, de la direction générale pour la société de l'information et les Médias. Ce projet lie plus de 70 institutions dans 27 pays européens pour construire une
grille pluridisciplinaire dans le domaine de la recherche européenne. L'EGEE est construit en utilisant les récents développements en matière de technologie de grille et les résultats des précédents projets au banc d'essai tel la DataGrid de l'Union européenne. Ses principaux objectifs sont :Construire une grille sûre, fiable et robuste.Développer une solution simple de

CERN dla szerszego grona naukowców.Analizując dane dotyczące mocy komputerów osobistych i superkomputerów można szybko dojść do wniosku, że po pierwsze moc obliczeniowa komputerów osobistych po kilku (kilkunastu) latach jest zbliżona do mocy superkomputerów, po drugie, że znaczna część mocy w danym momencie jest rozproszona - nie są to pojedyncze olbrzymie jednostki, ale dziesiątki tysięcy małych, kilku, czy kilkunastoprocesorowych stacji. W związku z tym powstał projekt udostępniania mocy obliczeniowej - w praktyce działa to tak, że jest struktura większych stacji odpowiedzialnych za nadzór nad pracą systemu (zarządcy zasobów, elementy pamięci, na których można zapisywać dane itd.), oraz maszyny uczestniczące w projekcie. Zadanie obliczeniowe zdefiniowane w postaci pliku JDL przekazywane jest do całej struktury i gdzieś liczone (w sposób przezroczysty dla użytkownika), a następnie zwracane wyniki.
