This article is about the medieval and early modern French currency, not the European Currency Unit (ECU) or an electronic control unit (ECU). The term écu may refer to one of several French coins. The first écu was a gold coin (the écu d'or) minted during the reign of Louis IX of France, in 1266. Ecu (from Latin scutum) means shield, and the coin was so called because its design included a shield bearing a coat of arms. The word is related to scudo and escudo. The value of the écu varied considerably over time, and silver coins (known as écu d'argent) were also introduced.

Mit Écu wurden französische Gold- und Silbermünzen vom Mittelalter bis zum 18. Jahrhundert bezeichnet. Der Name für den Écu leitet sich vom auf der Münze abgebildeten Wappenschild ab.Goldmünzen - auch "Écu d'or" (die Königsbüste zeigend: "Louis d'or"), im Deutschen in Anspielung auf die ab 1703 auf den Münzen abgebildete Sonne als Symbol des Sonnenkönigs "Sonnen-Pistole" genannt - wurden zu schwankenden Umrechnungskursen in die Silbereinheit Livre geprägt - die Schwankungen zwischen den Metallwerten erlaubten keine statische Fixierung von Goldmünzen im allgemeinen silberfixierten Münzfuß.

ECU (ang. European Currency Unit) – jednostka rozliczeniowa w Europejskim Systemie Monetarnym używana w latach 1979–1998; pełniła ponadto funkcję składnika rezerw walutowych w krajach Unii Europejskiej. W 1981 roku zastąpiła Europejską Jednostkę Rozrachunkową (EUA).1 stycznia 1999 zastąpiona przez euro w relacji 1 ECU = 1 EUR. Nigdy nie była pieniądzem i nie przyjmowała postaci materialnej. Była konstrukcją prawno-finansową, umożliwiającą rozliczanie się w handlu międzynarodowym.

Scudo (in francese écu, in spagnolo ed in portoghese escudo) è il nome di alcuni tipi di moneta sia d'oro che d'argento.
