ECOTYPE

An ecotype is a distinct entity of an animal, plant, or other organism that is closely linked (in its characteristics) to the ecological surroundings it inhabits. For example it is commonly accepted that the Tucuxi dolphin has two ecotypes - the riverine ecotype found in some South American rivers and the pelagic ecotype found in the South Atlantic Ocean. Similarly, it is accepted that the Bottlenose Dolphin has two ecotypes in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Un écotype est une population d'une espèce donnée qui présente des caractéristiques nouvelles adaptées à un type de milieu nouveau pour l'espèce. Les caractéristiques propres à l'écotype sont héréditaires.

Ekotyp (gr. oíkos - dom, týpos - treśc, obraz) - forma w obrębie gatunku roślin lub zwierząt, która tworzy populację (lub grupę populacji) posiadającą zestaw cech charakterystycznych dla danego środowiska, wykształcony w wyniku ewolucji. Cechy wyróżniające ekotyp wykształcają się w szczególności pod wpływem klinowej zmienności środowiska, która powoduje dostosowanie populacji do warunków siedliskowych.

Een ecotype is een onderscheidbare eenheid van een dier, plant of een ander organisme dat door zijn of haar eigenschappen nauw verbonden is met zijn of haar ecologische omgeving, waarin het leeft. Zo wordt er van de sotalia twee ecotypen onderscheiden. Het ene ecotype komt voor in de riviermonden van Zuid-Amerikaanse rivieren en het andere ecotype in het zuiden van de Atlantische Oceaan. Van de zandraket zijn er wereldwijd meer dan 750 verschillende ecotypen verzameld.
