The company was founded in 1963 in Bredebro, and now operates more than 3,000 shops worldwide, selling an extensive range of men's and women's shoes, and manufactures 12 million pairs of shoes each year. The company is owned by Hanni Toosbuy Kasprzak, daughter of founder Karl Toosbuy who died in 2004.

ECCO is een van oorsprong Deense schoenenproducent. Het bedrijf is in 1963 opgericht door Karl-Heinz Werner Toosbuy (23 februari 1928 - 8 juni 2004) te Bredebro (Denemarken). Zijn visie was het creëren en produceren van schoenen met een hoge mate van comfort en kwaliteit. ECCO behoort momenteel tot de grootste producenten van schoenen ter wereld en worden verkocht in meer dan 50 landen.

De European Council of Conscripts Organisations (ECCO) is opgericht in 1979 door diverse dienstplichtorganisaties uit Zweden, Finland, Denemarken, Noorwegen, (West-)Duitsland, Nederland, België, Frankrijk en Spanje. De organisatie heette oorspronkelijk European Conference of Conscripts Organisations. Gedurende de eerste tien jaar diende het als platform voor dienstplichtigen die eens per jaar samenkwamen om ideeën en ervaringen uit te wisselen. Begin 1990-jaren ontwikkelt ECCO zich tot een organisatie die meer actief wordt in het verdedigen van de rechten van dienstplichtige militairen.
