Dutch is a West Germanic language and the native language of most of the population of the Netherlands, and about sixty percent of the populations of Belgium and Suriname, the three member states of the Dutch Language Union. Most speakers live in the European Union, where it is a first language for about 23 million and a second language for another 5 million people. It also holds official status in the Caribbean island nations of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, while historical minorities remain in parts of France and Germany, and to a lesser extent, in Indonesia, and up to half a million native Dutch speakers may be living in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Cape Dutch dialects of Southern Africa have been standardised into Afrikaans, a mutually intelligible daughter language of Dutch which today is spoken to some degree by an estimated total of 15 to 23 million people in South Africa and Namibia.

Die niederländische Sprache (Nederlandse taal), auch Niederländisch (Aussprache: Nederlands], gehört wie die deutsche Sprache zum germanischen Zweig der indogermanischen Sprachen. Insbesondere das Niederdeutsche, das Englische und das Friesische haben viele Gemeinsamkeiten mit dem Niederländischen. Aus dem Niederländischen ging Afrikaans hervor.

Le néerlandais est une langue germanique principalement parlée aux Pays-Bas, en Belgique (en Flandre) et au Surinam. Le terme néerlandais dérive des mots neder land, littéralement « bas pays ». Nederlands qualifie l'origine géographique néerlandaise ou désigne la langue parlée dans cette région. Pour désigner un Néerlandais, on dira plutôt Nederlander, mais Nederlandse pour une Néerlandaise.

Nederländska (nederländska: ) är ett västgermanskt språk av lågfrankiskt ursprung. Språket kallas även ofta inkorrekt för holländska. Den variant av nederländska som talas i Belgien kallas i inofficiella sammanhang flamländska, och anses ibland vara ett eget språk. Detta är en åsikt som inte delas av språkforskare eller officiellt belgiskt språkbruk. Snarare kan nederländska och flamländska betraktas som olika dialekter av samma språk, där det flamländska ordförrådet bland annat använder fler lånord från franskan.

Język niderlandzki (holenderski) - Język indoeuropejski z grupy języków germańskich zaliczany do języków dolnoniemieckich. Pytanie o to, gdzie używa się języka niderlandzkiego, wywołuje szereg problemów. Dotyczą one nie tylko określenia obszaru, na jakim mówi się tym językiem, lecz także samej jego nazwy. Przykładowo po angielsku mówi się o języku niderlandzkim Dutch, ale niekiedy też Netherlandic czy Netherlandish. Z drugiej strony, język standardowy we Flandrii, północnej części Belgii, bywa czasem nazywany Flemish, choć jest to ten sam język standardowy, co w Holandii. Nawet w niderlandzkim używa się równolegle kilku określeń mających to samo znaczenie: Nederlands, Hollands (nieprawidłowo) i Vlaams.
