Dum-Dum

Dumdum (Bengali দমদম, Hindi दमदम ) is a city and a municipality in North 24 Parganas district  in the state of West Bengal, India. It is a neighbourhood in North-west Kolkata and the location of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, formerly Dum Dum Airport. Now Dum Dum is a well known place in greater Kolkata. Dum Dum provides a number of transport facilities in the city. It has developed into a modern commercial centre in the outskirts of Kolkata. Dum Dum region is important as it constitutes main entry points of the city. The area being provided with a domestic and international airport is the landing base for the foreigners visiting the city. The township falls in the northern region of Kolkata city. Dum Dum region is about 10 km from the city center which is taken to be Chandni Chowk. The nearby localities include Salt Lake, Jhilbagan, Ghughu Danga and Jawpur.

This article is about ammunition. For other meanings, see Dum Dums. Dum-dum or dumdum is the colloquial name for several types of expanding bullets used in ammunition for firearms. A normal (jacketed) round that has had notches cut across the top is one early example. The effect is that the bullet deforms and sometimes fragments upon impact due to the indentations. This creates a larger wound channel or channels with greater blood loss and trauma.

Dum-dum è un tipo di proiettile per armi leggere studiato per accrescere la letalità ed il potere d'arresto dell'arma, poi vietato per scopi militari dalla Convenzione di Ginevra dopo la prima guerra mondiale. E' a tutti gli effetti un proiettile "ad esplosione" e contiene una carica esplosiva all'interno. Da non confondere con i proiettili a punta cava che sfruttano il principio dell'espansione.
