Duchy of Burgundy

For the butterfly Hamearis lucina, see Duke of Burgundy (butterfly) The Duchy of Burgundy, today Bourgogne, has its origin in the small portion of traditional lands of Burgundians west of river Saône which in 843 was allotted to Charles the Bald's kingdom of West Franks. As it was known as their kingdom of Burgundy to France, the name Burgundy was attached over centuries to this border region, as most lands of the Burgundians lost central power and disintegrated into principalities known by other names. The Western kings appointed governors to this province with the title of Duke, and eventually the ducal position became hereditary.

O Ducado da Borgonha foi um dos estados mais importantes da Europa medieval, independente entre 880 e 1482. Não deve ser confundido com o condado da Borgonha, outro território da França. O feudo do duque da Borgonha correspondia aproximadamente à actual Borgonha, uma região da França.Graças à sua riqueza e território vasto, este ducado foi política e economicamente muito importante. Tecnicamente vassalos do rei de França, os duques da Borgonha souberam conservar a autonomia, manter uma política própria e ser suzerano de diversos condados e senhorios, incluindo o condado da Borgonha (actual Franche-Comté).
