Dischord Records is a
Washington, D.C.-based
independent record label specializing in the independent
punk music of the D.C.-area
music scene. The company is co-owned by
Ian MacKaye and
Jeff Nelson, who founded the label in
1980 to release records by local hardcore punk bands. Bands such as
Minor Threat,
Government Issue,
The Faith,
Void,
Youth Brigade,
Iron Cross,
Embrace,
Rites of Spring,
Nation of Ulysses,
Scream,
Soulside,
Gray Matter,
Jawbox,
Marginal Man,
Shudder to Think,
Dag Nasty,
Lungfish and
Fugazi have released records on Dischord. The label is most notable for having maintained a strict
do-it-yourself ethic, producing all of its albums by itself and selling them at discount prices without the help of major distributors.

Dischord ist ein
Plattenlabel mit Sitz in
Washington D.C.. Dischord wurde 1980 von
Ian MacKaye und Jeff Nelson gegründet, als diese zur Auflösung ihrer damaligen Band Teen Idles noch eine Platte veröffentlichen wollten. Als nächstes gründeten die beiden die Band
Minor Threat und nahmen weitere Bands aus dem Großraum Washington unter Vertrag. Die ersten Bands auf Dischord waren
S.O.A,
Government Issue, Untouchables und
Youth Brigade. Zu Beginn 1981 wurde mit S.O.A die zweite Platte auf Dischord herausgebracht. Das Label begann schnell zu wachsen, denn die Punkszene Washingtons brachte viele gute Bands hervor.
Rites of Spring, Jawbox
Dag Nasty und
Fugazi waren die neuen Bands. Zu Beginn der Neunziger mit dem Hype um Nirvana stieg das Interesse an der
Punk- und
Independent Musik.

Anche la registrazione e la produzione dei dischi è quasi sempre avvenuta (fin dagli albori dell'etichetta) nello studio personale e molto casalingo di MacKaye e Nelson: gli Inner Ear Studios. Interessante anche la "politica" dell'etichetta, basata su prezzi imposti dei dischi, ristampe continue (per evitare rarità), e la decisione produrre solo band provenienti dall'area DC. Uniche eccezioni i Lungfish (con Sean Meadows dei
June of 44), di
Arlington, VA (località distante una manciata di Km da Washington, in effetti) e i Trusty, originari dell'
Arkansas, che si trasferirono a Washington proprio per poter uscire su Dischord.
