Dirty South descended from southern rap: its inspirations drawn from Dr. Dre's Chronic album as well as Luther Campbell's 2 Live Crew's (one of the first southern rap groups to gain notoriety).

Down South, Southern Rap oder Dirty South ist ein Subgenre des Hip-Hop und gleichzeitig eine geographische Bezeichnung für Hip-Hop aus den Südstaaten der Vereinigten Staaten. Die Bezeichnung ist analog zu Westcoast-Rap oder Eastcoast-Rap, da Down South ebenso wie die Musik der beiden Küsten eigene stilistische Merkmale aufweist. Der Begriff „Dirty South“ geht auf ein gleichnamiges Lied der Gruppe Goodie Mob von ihrem Debüt-Album Soul Food zurück.
