Diptera

True flies are insects of the Order Diptera (Greek: di = two, and pteron = wing), possessing a single pair of wings on the mesothorax and a pair of halteres, derived from the hind wings, on the metathorax. The common housefly is a true fly and is one of the most widely distributed animals.The presence of a single pair of wings distinguishes true flies from other insects with "fly" in their name, such as mayflies, dragonflies, damselflies, stoneflies, whitefly, fireflies, alderflies, dobsonflies, snakeflies, sawflies, caddisflies, butterflies or scorpionflies. Some true flies have become secondarily wingless, especially in the superfamily Hippoboscoidea, or among those that are inquilines in social insect colonies.

Die Zweiflügler (Diptera) bilden eine Ordnung der Insekten innerhalb der Neuflügler (Neoptera). Zu den Zweiflüglern gehören mehr als 120.000 Arten aus fast 200 Familien, wobei in Mitteleuropa etwa 9200 Arten zu finden sind. Sie erreichen eine durchschnittliche Körpergröße zwischen 0,8 und 23 Millimeter. Die größte bisher bekannte Art ist Mydas heros mit etwa 60 mm Körperlänge und einer Flügelspannweite von 100 mm.

I Ditteri (Diptera, Linnaeus 1758) costituiscono un ordine di Insetti terrestri o idrofili, frequentemente acquaioli o acquatici negli stadi preimmaginali. Rappresenta uno dei più importanti raggruppamenti sistematici degli Insetti, per le molteplici relazioni con l'uomo e le sue attività. L'ordine, presente sulla Terra dal Giurassico inferiore, comprende circa 105 000 specie conosciute.
