Diogo Gomes (c. 1420 – c. 1485), was
Portuguese navigator, explorer and writer.He started out as a cavaleiro (
Knight) of the royal household and in 1440 he was appointed receiver of the royal customs. In 1466 judge at
Sintra (juiz das cousas e feitorias contadas de Sintra) and on
5 March 1482 he was confirmed in the last-named office. He wrote, especially for the benefit of
Martin Behaim, a Latin
chronicle of great value, dealing with the life and discoveries of Prince
Henry the Navigator, and divided into three parts: De prima inventione Guineae, De insulis primo inventis in mare (sic) Occidentis and De inventione insularum de Acores.
