Levee
A levee, levée (; ), dike (or dyke), embankment, floodbank or stopbank is an elongated naturally occurring ridge or artificially constructed fill or wall, which regulates water levels. It is usually earthen and often parallel to the course of a river in its floodplain or along low-lying coastlines.

Deich
Ein Deich (von mittelniederdeutsch dîk: Damm, Teich) ist ein Bauwerk, das als künstlich aufgeschütteter Damm längs eines Fluss- oder Meerufers liegt. In Österreich wird er eher als Schutzdamm bezeichnet.

Digue
Une digue est un remblai longitudinal, naturel ou artificiel, le plus souvent composé de terre. La fonction principale de cet ouvrage est d’empêcher la submersion des basses-terres se trouvant le long de la digue par les eaux d'un lac, d'une rivière ou de la mer, de submerger.

Dijk (waterkering)

Een dijk is een door mensen aangelegde waterkering die een gebied beschermt tegen overstroming met een hoge waterstand en golven. Een grondlichaam dat permanent belast wordt door een water met een relatief vast peil noemt men kade.

Binnen Nederland zijn twee (bestuurlijke) typen dijken: de primaire waterkeringen en regionale waterkeringen welke veelal secundaire waterkeringen worden genoemd.
