Diamant

The Diamant rocket (diamant is French for "diamond") was the first exclusively French expendable launch system and at the same time the first satellite launcher not built by either USA or USSR. As such it is the main predecessor of all subsequent European launcher projects. It was derived from the military program Pierres précieuses (fr.: gemstones) that included the five prototypes Agathe, Topaze, Emeraude, Rubis et Saphir (Agate, Topaz, Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire). Out of 12 launch attempts between 1965 and 1975, 9 were successful. Most notably it was used to put Astérix, the first French satellite, into orbit on November 26, 1965. Despite the success, France stopped its national launcher program in favor of the European Ariane launcher in 1975. Three successive versions of the Diamant rocket were developed, designated A, B and BP4. All versions had three stages and a payload of approximately 150kg for a 200km orbit.

Diamant ist neben Graphit und den Fullerenen eine der drei Modifikationen des Kohlenstoffs und mit einer Mohshärte von 10 das härteste bekannte Mineral. Seine Schleifhärte ist sogar 140-mal größer als die des Korund. Allerdings ist die Härte des Diamanten auf seinen einzelnen Kristallflächen unterschiedlich, wodurch es erst möglich wird, Diamant mit Diamant zu schleifen, da in dem dazu verwendeten Diamantpulver jeder Härtegrad vorkommt. Diamant ist bei Raumtemperatur und Normaldruck metastabil. Die Aktivierungsenergie für den Phasenübergang in die stabile Modifikation (Graphit) ist jedoch so hoch, dass eine Umwandlung in Graphit bei Raumtemperatur praktisch nicht stattfindet. Diamant kristallisiert im kubischen Kristallsystem und ist in reinem Zustand farblos und transparent, kann aber durch Verunreinigungen in den verschiedensten Farben auftreten; die Strichfarbe ist weiß. Im organischen Molekül Adamantan ist die Konfiguration der C-Atome die gleiche wie im Diamantgitter.

Diamant ist die Bezeichnung einer Familie französischer Trägerraketen, mit deren Hilfe zwischen 1965 und 1975 eine Reihe kleiner Satelliten gestartet wurden. Diese Rakete wurde in einigen Versionen gebaut.

Diamant (Oudgrieks: αδάμας of adamas, "onverslaanbaar") is een van de vier natuurlijke allotrope verschijningsvormen van koolstof (de meest voorkomende is grafiet). In diamant hebben de koolstof-koolstofbindingen de tetraëdische structuur. Het is voor zover bekend het hardste materiaal dat in de natuur voorkomt; het is dan ook het ijkpunt voor hardheid 10 op de hardheidsschaal van Mohs. Er zijn slechts twee industrieel vervaardigde materialen, namelijk Aggregated Carbon Nanorods en ultrahard fulleriet, die harder zijn.
