Dhiban is a modern town in
Jordan, approximately 70 kilometers south of
Amman and east of the
Dead Sea. Previously nomadic, the modern community settled the town in the 1950s. Today, Dhiban is approximately 15000 members strong, with many working in the army, government agencies, or in seasonal agricultural production. A number of young people study in nearby universities in
Karak,
Madaba, and
Amman. Most inhabitants belong to the Bani Hamida tribe and practice
Islam.

Dhiban (auch Diban) ist eine Stadt in
Jordanien. Sie liegt in der Gegend des biblischen
Moab, etwa fünf Kilometer nördlich des Flusses
Arnon und rund 20 Kilometer östlich des
Toten Meeres. Dhiban ist bekannt als Fundort der
Mescha-Stele.Die Stadt wird bereits im
Alten Testament erwähnt, unter den Namen Dibon (
Num. 21.30) und Dibon-gad (Num. 3.45). Sie soll von
Gad und Dibon erbaut worden sein (Isa. 15.9). Nach der Mescha-Stele war Dhiban im 9. Jh. v. Chr. vermutlich Hauptstadt des Reiches Moab.
