The German language (, ) is a West Germanic language and one of the world's major languages. German is closely related to and classified alongside English and Dutch. Around the world, German is spoken by ~100 million native speakers and also ~30 million non-native speakers, and Standard German is widely taught in schools and universities in Europe. Worldwide, German accounts for the most written translations into and from a language (Guinness Book of World Records).

La langue allemande (Deutsch en allemand) est une langue indo-européenne appartenant à la branche occidentale des langues germaniques. "Germanique" et "allemand" ne sont donc pas synonymes. Le terme germanique "theut-" [ðeut-] signifie "peuple" et le nom des Teutons en dérive. Son dérivé "theutisk" a donné en allemand "deutsch" et en français les mots "tudesque" et "thiois" ; en italien "allemand" se dit "tedesco", et en danois "tysk". Il est aussi à l'origine du mot anglais "Dutch" qui signifie abusivement "hollandais", bien qu'aux États-Unis certains dialectes allemands soient appelés "Dutch". La racine theut- ("peuple") est d'origine indo-européenne, et on la retrouve en gaulois touta ("peuple") et en breton tud ("les gens"), ainsi qu'en latin totus (le "tout", "tous").

Die deutsche Sprache (auch das Deutsche) gehört zum westlichen Zweig der germanischen Sprachen, ist eine der meistgesprochenen europäischen Sprachen und zählt somit zu den neun Weltsprachen.Die Mundarten des Deutschen lassen sich infolge der so genannten hochdeutschen Lautverschiebung in hochdeutsche und niederdeutsche Mundarten aufteilen. Diese wiederum werden überdacht von der  Standardsprache (auch Standarddeutsch, Hochdeutsch oder Schriftdeutsch, meist einfach Deutsch genannt), die auf der Grundlage hochdeutscher Mundarten entstanden ist.

Jest bardzo zróżnicowany regionalnie, i niektóre dialekty – takie jak dialekt używany w "niemieckojęzycznej" części Szwajcarii (schweizerdeutsch albo schwyzerdütsch, należący do grupy dialektów alemańskich) – są czasem klasyfikowane jako osobne języki.
