The Department of the Navy of the United States of America (DON) was established by an Act of Congress on 30 April 1798 (initiated by the recommendation of James McHenry)., to provide a government organizational structure to the United States Navy and, from 1834 onwards, for the United States Marine Corps, and when directed by the President, for the United States Coast Guard as a service within the Navy. The Department of the Navy was an Executive Department and the Secretary of the Navy was a member of the President's cabinet until 1949, when amendments to the National Security Act of 1947 changed the name of the National Military Establishment to the Department of Defense and made it an Executive Department. The Department of the Navy then became, along with the Department of the Army and Department of the Air Force, a Military Department within the Department of Defense: subject to the authority, direction and control of the Secretary of Defense.

Das Department of the Navy (dt. etwa: Marineamt) wurde durch ein Bundesgesetz am 30. April 1798 geschaffen, um für die zivile Verwaltung der US Navy und des US Marine Corps zu sorgen. Das Marineministerium wird durch den Marineminister, den Secretary of the Navy (SecNav), geführt. Das Ministerium hatte bis 1947 Kabinettsrang, wurde dann aber zusammen mit dem Kriegsministerium im Zuge des National Security Act dem Verteidigungsministerium untergeordnet.

Le Département de la Marine des États-Unis (United States Department of the Navy) a été créé par une  loi du Congrès le 30 avril 1798, pour fournir un soutien administratif et technique ainsi qu'un commandement civil à la marine américaine et au Corps des Marines des États-Unis (et quand elle été dirigée par le Congrès ou le Président, la Garde-côte des États-Unis). Ce département est dirigé par le Secrétaire à la Marine, aussi connu sous l'acronyme SECNAV dans le jargon naval. Il est assisté par un Secrétaire adjoint à la Marine. Le Secrétaire à la Marine était membre du Cabinet présidentiel, ainsi que le Secrétaire à la Guerre qui lui avait en charge l'US Army, jusqu'en 1947 quand l'Établissement militaire national fut créé. Cet établissement fut plus tard renommé Département de la Défense (DOD) en 1949. Le Département de la Marine devint alors une composante du DOD.

Het United States Department of the Navy werd opgericht door het Amerikaanse Congres op 30 april 1798 om politieke leiding en technische en administratieve steun te te geven aan de United States Navy, de Amerikaanse marine. Het Department of the Navy maakt deel uit van het Department of Defense.
