Democratic Party (United States)

The Democratic Party is one of two major political parties in the United States, the other being the Republican Party. It is the oldest political party in the United States and arguably the oldest party in the world.Since the 2006 midterm elections the Democratic Party is the majority party for the 110th Congress; the party holds an outright majority in the House of Representatives and the Democratic caucus (including two independents) constitutes a majority in the United States Senate. Democrats also hold a majority of state governorships and control a plurality of state legislatures. It is currently the largest political party with 72 million registered members, 42.6 percent of the electorate. The democratic base comprises two widely diverging demographics. On one hand, there are those in the working class, who are commonly conservative on social issues. On the other hand, it includes well-educated and relatively affluent liberals.

Die Demokratische Partei (Democratic Party, Democrats) ist neben der Republikanischen Partei eine der beiden großen Parteien in den USA. Die Demokraten gelten im Vergleich mit den Republikanern als weniger konservativ und mehr am Progressivismus orientiert. Das inoffizielle Wappentier ist der Esel, obwohl er im Gegensatz zum Elefanten der Republikaner nie offiziell als solches angenommen wurde und sein Ursprung ungeklärt ist. Die – ebenfalls inoffizielle – Parteifarbe der Demokraten ist Blau.

Il Partito Democratico (Democratic Party) è uno dei due principali partiti politici contemporanei degli Stati Uniti, insieme al Partito Repubblicano.Dalle elezioni di medio termine del 2006 il Partito Democratico ha la maggioranza al Congresso; il partito ha una più ampia maggioranza alla Camera dei Rappresentanti e una più risicata maggioranza al Senato. Inoltre ha la maggioranza dei governatori e delle legislature degli stati federati.Il Partito Democratico ha origine dal Partito Democratico-Repubblicano, fondato da Thomas Jefferson, James Madison e altri influenti anti-federalisti nel 1792. È il più vecchio partito politico del mondo. Dopo la divisione dal Partito Repubblicano nelle elezioni del 1912, si è posizionato a sinistra del Partito Repubblicano nelle questioni economiche. La filosofia attivista a favore della classe lavoratrice di Franklin D. Roosevelt chiamata "liberalismo" negli Stati Uniti (simile, in realtà, per alcuni aspetti, alla socialdemocrazia europea) ha rappresentato gran parte del programma del partito sin dal 1932. La coalizione del New Deal di Roosevelt controllò spesso il governo nazionale fino al 1964. Il movimento per i diritti civili degli anni 1960, approvato dal partito, gli fece perdere parte dei consensi negli stati del sud.
