Democratic-Republican Party
The Democratic-Republican Party, also known as the Republican Party (not similar to the present-day
Republican Party), was founded by
Thomas Jefferson and
James Madison in 1792. It became the dominant political party in the United States from 1800 until the 1820s, when it split into competing factions, one of which became the modern-day
Democratic Party. Its members identified the party as the Republicans, Jeffersonians, Democrats, or combinations of these (such as Jeffersonian republicans).
