Debian is a computer operating system composed of software packages released as free and open source software primarily under the GNU General Public License along with other free software licenses. Debian GNU/Linux, which includes the GNU OS tools and Linux kernel, is a popular and influential Linux distribution. It is distributed with access to repositories containing thousands of software packages ready for installation and use. Debian is known for relatively strict adherence to the philosophies of Unix and free software as well as using collaborative software development and testing processes. Debian can be used on a variety of hardware, from NAS devices to phones, laptops, desktops and servers. It focuses on stability and security and is used as a base for many other distributions.

Debian [] ist ein Betriebssystem, das besonderen Wert darauf legt, dass die in ihm enthaltene Software die Anforderungen von Freier Software erfüllt. Debian verwendet im Moment den Linux-Kern. Weil die meisten grundlegenden Systemwerkzeuge vom GNU-Projekt stammen, wird auch von Debian GNU/Linux gesprochen. Debian enthält eine große Auswahl an Anwendungsprogrammen und Werkzeugen; derzeit sind es über 25.100 Programmpakete. Neben Debian GNU/Linux mit dem Linux-Kernel existierten auch Varianten mit anderen Kerneln, die sich zurzeit noch in Entwicklung befinden. Die aktuelle stabile Version heißt Debian Lenny.

Debian - projekt wolnej dystrybucji systemu operacyjnego GNU/Linux realizowany przez ochotników na całym świecie. Wewnątrz Debiana istnieją również projekty, mające na celu stworzenie dystrybucji systemu GNU/Hurd, BSD a nawet dystrybucji wolnego oprogramowania na platformę Windows.
