Dead Sea

The Dead Sea (, , "Sea of Salt"; , , "Dead Sea") is a salt lake between the West Bank and Israel to the west, and Jordan to the east. It is said to be the lowest point on Earth, at below sea level; its shores are actually the lowest point on dry land, as there are deeper points on Earth under water or ice. At 330m deep (1,083 feet), the Dead Sea is the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. It is also the world's second saltiest body of water, after Lake Asal in Djibouti. With 30 percent salinity, it is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean . Israeli experts say it is nine times saltier than the Mediterranean Sea (31.5% salt versus 3.5 or the Mediterranean). The Dead Sea is long and wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River.

La mer Morte est un lac d'eau salée du Proche-Orient. D'une surface approximative de , elle est alimentée par le Jourdain et bordée par Israël, la Cisjordanie et la Jordanie. Alors que la salinité moyenne de l'eau de mer oscille entre 4 et 6 %, celle de la mer Morte est d'approximativement 22 à 25 %. Son taux de sodium est de 275 grammes par litre d'eau. Aucun poisson et aucune algue (macroscopique) ne peuvent subsister dans de telles conditions, c'est ce qui lui vaut le nom de « mer morte ». En réalité, cette mer n'est pas complètement morte puisqu'on sait aujourd'hui qu'il existe des organismes microscopiques (plancton, bactéries (halophile et halobacteria)...) qui y vivent.

Das Tote Meer (hebr. ים המלח Jam haMelach bzw. „Salzmeer“; Bahr al-Mayyit oder Bahr Lūt, „Meer des Todes“ oder „Meer des Lot“) ist ein See, der vom Jordan gespeist wird. Er grenzt an Israel, das unter israelischer Verwaltung stehende Westjordanland und an Jordanien. Der Name geht vermutlich auf Hieronymus aus dem 4. Jahrhundert zurück. Zuvor wurde der See „Salzmeer“ oder „Asphaltsee“ genannt.

Il Mar Morto (in ebraico ים המלח, letteralmente mare del sale e in arabo البحر الميت) è - propriamente - un lago situato tra Israele (e il territorio della Cisgiordania) e la Giordania. Il mar Morto si trova nella depressione più bassa della Terra all'elevazione di 398 metri sotto il livello del mare. Lungo 76 km e largo 16 ha una superficie di 1.000 kmq. L'acqua è troppo salata e per questo non ci sono pesci, né alghe. Da qui il nome mar Morto.
