David Paich

David Paich (born David Frank Paich on June 25 1954 in Los Angeles, California) is a session musician from the 1970s,  1980s and 1990s,  keyboard player, vocalist and main composer of the Los Angeles based rock/pop band Toto. David is the son of the late jazz composer Marty Paich.David Paich is one of the most prolific songwriters of the 1980s. He wrote "Rosanna", "99", "Hold the Line", "Georgy Porgy", and most of Toto's hits over the years, including several 1970s hits by pop artists (such as Cheryl Lynn's hit, "Got To Be Real"). David co-wrote the 1982 hit, "Africa", along with Toto's drummer Jeff Porcaro. David also sang lead vocals on the song. He has co-writing credits with Boz Scaggs on the songs "What Can I Say", "Lowdown", "Lido Shuffle", and occasionally still sits in on keyboards with Boz Scaggs' band. As songwriter he wrote or co-wrote songs for Cher, Jacksons, Andy Williams, George Benson, Jon Anderson(Yes) and Chicago. As arranger he worked for Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Patti Austin, Donna Summer and many more.

David Paich è nato il 25 giugno 1954 a Los Angeles (USA, il nome di nascita è David Frank), ed è l'attuale tastierista e cantante dei Toto. È uno dei membri fondatori della band nata nel 1978 proprio a Los Angeles. Proviene da una famiglia di musicisti, infatti è figlio di un jazzista e compositore/arrangiatore di colonne sonore, Marty Paich. Nel 1970 presso la High School di Los Angeles, nella sessione per musicisti, ha i primi contatti con quelli che diventeranno poi i Toto: Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball, Steve e Jeff Porcaro, e David Hungate. Insieme a Hungate e Jeff Porcaro registra Silk Degrees, un disco che ottiene buoni riscontri di vendita, con chiare influenze musicali pop/rock, ma racchiudendo anche elementi disco. Nell'ottobre del 1978 la svolta con la nascita dei Toto e l'uscita dell'album di debutto con titolo omonimo della band, che ottiene anche esso un ottimo successo. Dopo Hydra (1979) e Turn Back (1981) esce l'album Toto IV (1982) che contiene hit come Africa e Rosanna, scritte proprio da Paich. David ha scritto non solo i pezzi che sono poi diventati i "cavalli di battaglia" dei Toto, ma anche molte altre canzoni degli anni '70 e '80 collaborando con altri artisti, ad esempio Cheryl Lynns, Got to be Real, o con Bryan Adams, Please Forgive Me, con Michael Jackson e con gli USA for Africa nel pezzo We Are the World.
