Data Link Layer

The data link layer is layer two of the seven-layer OSI model as well as of the five-layer TCP/IP reference model. It responds to service requests from the network layer and issues service requests to the physical layer.This is the layer which transfers data between adjacent network nodes in a wide area network or between nodes on the same local area network segment. The data link layer provides the functional and procedural means to transfer data between network entities and might provide the means to detect and possibly correct errors that may occur in the Physical layer. Examples of data link protocols are Ethernet for local area networks and PPP, HDLC and ADCCP for point-to-point connections.

Il livello datalink è il livello 2 sia del modello ISO/OSI sia di quello TCP/IP. Questo livello riceve pacchetti dal livello di rete e forma i frame che vengono passati al successivo livello fisico.Il compito del livello datalink è la trasmissione di frame tra due nodi collegati. Comprende normalmente delle funzioni di controllo di errore (ad esempio mediante Cyclic Redundancy Check CRC), talvolta con capacità di correzione dell'errore. Questo livello non fornisce normalmente la garanzia che un frame inviato sia consegnato a destinazione.

De datalinklaag is de tweede laag uit het OSI-model. Deze laag zorgt voor betrouwbaar transport van de data over een verbinding (link).Men moet bijvoorbeeld denken aan de verbinding tussen de netwerkkaarten van een computer en een router. Dus niet het fysieke medium, de kabel zelf (deze is ingedeeld in de fysieke laag, waar de signalen die over deze kabel heengaan. )Adressering gebeurt op basis van het door de fabrikant ingegeven MAC-adres door een switch.

Recibe peticiones del nivel de red y utiliza los servicios del nivel físico. El objetivo del nivel de enlace es conseguir que la información fluya, libre de errores, entre dos máquinas que estén conectadas directamente (servicio orientado a conexión).
