Darius the Great (c. 549 BC– 486/485 BC; Dãrayavahush: "Upholder of good", was the son of Hystaspes, and king of Persia from 522 BC to 486/485 BC. His name in modern Persian is داریوش , in Hebrew דַּרְיָוֶשׁ (Daryawesh), the ancient Greek sources call him (Dareios), and Indians called him दरायु (Darāyu) in Sanskrit. Darius was the Latin spelling used by ancient Roman historians. The English pronunciation is sometimes , as one might expect from the spelling, but for example the American Heritage Dictionary gives , and this is the pronunciation found in the 2004 movie Alexander in reference to Darius III.
