The attacking midfielder first came to prominence with Sporting Clube de Portugal. He also starred in the 1994 UEFA European Under-18 Championship, scoring once against France. Indeed, his impact at club and underage level was such that he made his senior international debut in 1995, just a month after his 19th birthday. He subsequently starred in a loan spell with West Ham United FC in England, before he was lured to the Netherlands and AFC Ajax. Extremely skilful he has yet to fulfil the promise of his teenage years. Since his debut, his international appearances have been intermittent, though he did return after an absence of 15 months for the February friendly with Belgium. He won the Dutch league title in 1998 with Ajax.
