For the butterfly genus, see Danaus (genus). Danaus, or Danaos ("sleeper") was a Greek mythological character, twin brother of Aegyptus son of Achiroe and Belus, a mythical king of Egypt. The myth of Danaus is a foundation legend (or re-foundation legend) of Argos, one of the foremost Mycenaean cities of the Peloponnesus. In Homer's Iliad, "Danaans" ("tribe of Danaus") and "Argives" commonly designate the Greek forces opposed to the Trojans.

Dans la mythologie grecque, Danaos ou Danaüs (en grec ancien  / Danaos) est le fils de Bélos (roi africain) et d'Anchinoé, et le frère jumeau d'Égyptos. Sa légende est un mythe fondateur (ou plutôt refondateur) pour la cité d'Argos, dans le Péloponnèse, une des principales villes mycéniennes. Dans l'Iliade, Homère désigne fréquemment les Grecs sous le nom de « Danaens » (descendants de Danaos) ou d'« Argiens ».

Danaos (lateinisch Danaus, griechisch Δαναος (Etymologie unklar) aus dem Geschlecht der Io, ist in der griechischen Mythologie König von Argos im Peloponnes, der Vater der 50 Danaiden (50 Töchter, mit verschiedenen Frauen) und Stammvater der Danaer. Er ist der Sohn des Belos und der Anchinoë (Tochter des Flussgottes Neilos), der Zwillingsbruder des Aigyptos (Ägyptos und nach Euripides auch Bruder des Kepheus und Phineus), war aus Chemmis in Ägypten gebürtig, zugleich aber als Urenkel von Epaphos (durch Io Enkel des Inachos) von argivischer Abstammung.

Danaos, w mitologii greckiej to syn Belosa i Anchinoe, brat króla Egiptu Ajgyptosa, ojciec pięćdziesięciu córek Danaid. Uciekł z Egiptu w obawie przed bratem Ajgyptosem wraz z córkami i osiedlił się w Argos, gdzie wkrótce został obwołany królem. Z jego rozkazu córki zamordowały swych mężów podczas nocy poślubnej.

Danao è una figura della mitologia greca, figlio di Belo, generato quest'ultimo da Poseidone e Libia. Suo fratello gemello era Egitto. Danao subisce la persecuzione di Egitto, che vorrebbe per sé tutto il regno di Belo. Inoltre avendo avuto entrambi 50 figli, maschi quelli di Egitto, femmine quelle di Danao, vorrebbe che i cugini si unissero in matrimonio. L'imposizione del fratello costringe Danao a lasciare l'Africa. Con una nave giunge in Grecia  e si stabilisce ad Argo. Qui regnava Gelanore, ma viene subito accettato dagli Argivi che di lì a poco lo acclamano loro re. Dopo la morte il suo sepolcro divenne oggetto di culto eroico. Le vicende di Danao e Egitto sono state rappresentate da Eschilo in una sua tragedia le Supplici.
