DVD

DVD (also known as "Digital Versatile Disc" and "Digital Video Disc") is a popular optical disc storage media format used for data storage. Its main uses are for movies, software, and data archiving. Most DVDs are of the same dimensions as compact discs (CDs) but store more than 6 times the data.The term DVD is used in describing three ways that data is stored on the disks — DVD-ROM has data which can only be read and not written,  DVD-R can be written once and then functions as a DVD-ROM, and DVD-RAM holds data that can be re-written multiple times. DVD-Video and DVD-Audio discs respectively refer to properly formatted and structured video and audio content. Everything else, including other types of DVD discs with video content, is referred to as a DVD-Data disc. DVD is also used generically to refer to HD (High Density) video disc formats Blu-ray and HD DVD.

DVD±R (also DVD+/-R, "DVD plus/dash R", or "DVD plus/minus R") is not a separate DVD format, but rather is a shorthand term for a DVD drive that can accept both of the common recordable DVD formats. Likewise, DVD±RW (also written as DVD±R/W, DVD±R/RW, DVD±R/±RW, DVD+/-RW, and other arbitrary ways) handles both common rewritable disc types (but not usually DVD-RAM).  [1]

Die DVD ist ein digitales Speichermedium, das einer CD ähnelt, aber über eine deutlich höhere Speicherkapazität (z. B. 4,7 GB) verfügt. Sie zählt zu den optischen Datenspeichern. Das Backronym „DVD“ ging auf die Abkürzung von Digital Video Disc und später Digital Versatile Disc (engl. für digitale vielseitige Scheibe) zurück, ist seit 1999 aber nach Angaben des DVD-Forums ein eigenständiger Begriff ohne Langform. In der Alltagssprache wird der Ausdruck „DVD“ im Zusammenhang mit Filmen häufig im Sinne des logischen Formats DVD-Video verwendet.

Die DVD-R und DVD+R sind spezielle DVD-Varianten, mit welchen die Daten unveränderlich auf eine DVD geschrieben werden können. Das R steht für englisch recordable, zu deutsch: beschreibbar. Die DVD±R ist der direkte Nachfolger der CD-R.
