DVD-Video

DVD-Video is a consumer video format used to store digital video on DVD (DVD-ROM) discs, and is currently the dominant form of consumer video formats in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. Discs using the DVD-Video specification require a DVD drive and an MPEG-2 decoder (e.g., a DVD player, or a DVD computer drive with a software DVD player). Commercial DVD movies are encoded using a combination of MPEG-2 compressed video and audio of varying formats (often multi-channel formats as described below). Typical data rates for DVD movies range from 3–10  Mbit/s, and the bit rate is usually adaptive.

Die DVD-Video ist eine technische Spezifikation zur Speicherung von Videos auf einem DVD-Datenträger. Dieser Standard wurde vom DVD-Forum geschaffen, um Zukunftssicherheit und problemlose Abspielbarkeit auf allen Geräten zu garantieren, aber nicht zuletzt auch, um das Medium unter der Kontrolle der Filmindustrie zu halten – so können DVDs laut Standard nur auf autorisierten Geräten abgespielt werden. Die DVD-Video ist die bekannteste DVD-Variante, weshalb der Volksmund sie auch unpräzise mit DVD bezeichnet. Andere bekannte Synonyme von DVD-Video sind DVD-Spielfilm oder kurz DVD-Film.

Die DVD ist ein digitales Speichermedium, das einer CD ähnelt, aber über eine deutlich höhere Speicherkapazität (z. B. 4,7 GB) verfügt. Sie zählt zu den optischen Datenspeichern. Das Backronym „DVD“ ging auf die Abkürzung von Digital Video Disc und später Digital Versatile Disc (engl. für digitale vielseitige Scheibe) zurück, ist seit 1999 aber nach Angaben des DVD-Forums ein eigenständiger Begriff ohne Langform. DVD-Video jest to format płyty, na której nagrany jest film. Słowo Video sugeruje, że na płycie nagrany jest film (na płyty DVD można nagrać też inne pliki). Film może być bardzo wysokiej jakości (zarówno obraz jak i dźwięk), obraz może być panoramiczny (16:9) lub zwykły (proporcje 3:4). Dźwięk zwykle zapisany jest w formacie Dolby Digital, co nie koniecznie oznacza dźwięk doogólny, czyli 5.1 - może to być dźwięk stereo, ale zwykle mamy dźwięk 5.1. Nowsze filmy mają dźwięk zapisany w formacie DTS. Jest on wyższej jakości w porównaniu do Dolby Digital, dzięki mniejszemu stopniu kompresji (4:1).

Il DVD-Video è un'applicazione DVD riguardante tipi di dati multimediali audiovisivi (film) suddivisi in file, organizzati secondo le specifiche proposte dal DVD forum e sviluppate da OSTA (Optical Storage Technology Association). I dati video di questa applicazione sono compressi tipicamente utilizzando MPEG-2, mentre la compressione dei dati audio è variabile ed a scelta del produttore. Audio e video non sono memorizzati in file separati ma miscelati (multiplexati) in uno stream unico. Il supporto su cui l'applicazione viene memorizzata generalmente è un DVD 9 (DVD singola faccia, doppio strato: 8,5 GB/240 min).

Een dvd is een optische schijf met een diameter van 12 centimeter waarop met behulp van optische technologie digitale gegevens duurzaam kunnen worden opgeslagen. Het systeem werd ontwikkeld onder de naam Digital Video Disc maar bleek al snel meer toepassingen te kennen dan video alleen. Een populaire verklaring van de letters dvd is daarom ook wel Digital Versatile Disc. Officieel hebben de letters echter geen betekenis.De dvd wordt zowel gebruikt voor het distribueren van speelfilms als voor het distribueren en opslaan van computersoftware en gegevens. Het is in Nederland de opvolger van het VHS-videosysteem. In het buitenland waren vooral eind jaren 90 de video-cd (VCD) en laserdisk lange tijd populair. Deze formaten hebben zich echter als een wereldwijde standaard niet kunnen bewijzen. De dvd slaagde hier echter wel. In computers is het de opvolger van de cd-rom-technologie (inclusief cd-r en cd-rw) in combinatie met het gebruik van het video-cd-formaat. Of de dvd ook de audio-cd zal vervangen is nog niet duidelijk aangezien er ook de Super Audio Compact Disc bestaat als alternatief voor de dvd-audio. Een dvd wordt meestal opgeborgen in een dvd-box.
