DVD-R

DVD-R is a DVD recordable format. A DVD-R has a larger storage capacity than its optical predecessor, the 700 MB CD-R, typically storing 4.71 GB (or 4.382 GiB), although the capacity of the original standard developed by Pioneer was 3.95 GB (3.68 GiB). Pioneer has also developed an 8.54 GB dual layer version, which appeared on the market in 2005. Data on a DVD-R cannot be changed, whereas a DVD-RW (DVD-rewritable) can be rewritten multiple (1000+) times. DVD-R(W) is one of three competing industry standard DVD recordable formats; the others are DVD+R(W) and DVD-RAM.

A DVD+R is a once-writable optical disc with 4.7 GB (4.377 GiB) of storage capacity (more precisely, 2295104 sectors of 2048 bytes each). It has slightly less storage capacity than the DVD-R (4.382 GiB). The format was developed by a coalition of corporations, known as the DVD+RW Alliance, in mid 2002. Since the DVD+R format is a competing format to the DVD-R format, which is developed by the DVD Forum, it has not been approved by the DVD Forum, which claims that the DVD+R format is not an official DVD format.

DVD±R (also DVD+/-R, "DVD plus/dash R", or "DVD plus/minus R") is not a separate DVD format, but rather is a shorthand term for a DVD drive that can accept both of the common recordable DVD formats. Likewise, DVD±RW (also written as DVD±R/W, DVD±R/RW, DVD±R/±RW, DVD+/-RW, and other arbitrary ways) handles both common rewritable disc types (but not usually DVD-RAM).  [1]

Il DVD-R (DVD-RW per i supporti riscrivibili) è un disco ottico scrivibile una sola volta e ha una capacità superiore di un CD-R, tipicamente di 4.700.372.992 byte (4,7 GB o 4,37 GiB), anche se la capacità originale sviluppata dalla Pioneer è stata di 3,95 GB. Pioneer ha sviluppato anche una versione Dual Layer di 8,54 GB (8.547.991.552 byte) che è apparsa nel mercato nel 2005.

Un DVD+R è un disco ottico scrivibile una sola volta con una capacità di 4,7 GB (2.295.104 settori di 2048 byte ciascuno), sviluppato dalla DVD+RW Alliance nel 2002. Dal momento della sua nascita il DVD+R fu in competizione col formato del DVD-Forum: il DVD-R. Nell'ottobre del 2003 viene sviluppato un DVD+R a doppio strato (DVD+R DL) con il doppio della capacità.
