Un dôme (du provençal doma, du latin doma, du grec dôma) est un élément d'architecture. Le terme désigne la couverture d'un comble de plan centré (circulaire, elliptique ou polygonal) généralement surmontée d'un lanternon en amortissement. Souvent utilisé comme synonyme de coupole (qui est en fait un ouvrage intérieur). Il n'y a pas de lien étymologique entre ce terme et son homonyme qui désigne une église importante en Italie et en Allemagne, si ce n'est la parenté au niveau indo-européen entre le grec dôma et le latin domus.

Als Kuppel (von lateinisch cupula „kleine Tonne“, möglicherweise von arabisch  „gewölbtes Gebäude, Gemach“) bezeichnet man den halbkugel- oder glockenförmigen oberen Teil eines Raumes, der aus Steinen, Ziegeln oder in neuerer Zeit aus Beton und anderen Materialien gebildet wird. Die eigentliche Kuppel ist aber die aus keilförmigen Steinen zusammengesetzte Decke, die den teilweise oder ganz von Mauern umschlossenen Raum frei überspannt.

Kopuła – sklepienie półkoliste lub półeliptyczne oparte na murze lub bębnie na planie kolistym, eliptycznym albo wielobocznym za pośrednictwem pendentywów lub tromp. Do budowy kopuł używano ciosów kamiennych lub cegieł w kształcie klina (klińców). Obecnie do konstrukcji kopuł używa się stali lub żelbetu. Sklepienna część kopuły nazywana jest czaszą, a widoczna z wnętrza podniebieniem. W okresie renesansu wprowadzono kopuły dwuwarstwowe o warstwach połączonych żebrami. Powierzchnia, widoczna od strony wewnętrznej często są wzbogacona przez wprowadzenie dodatkowych poziomych pasów, kasetonów, zdobiona malarsko lub rzeźbiarsko (sztukateria).
