In Norse mythology, the dísir ("ladies") are fate goddesses who can be both benevolent and antagonistic towards mortal people, and they include the norns. They could also be the protective spirits of Norse clans, and especially in connection with war expeditions, a function for which they were named fylgjas. Moreoever, in later sources, the dísir also appear as Odin's shieldmaidens, called valkyries, and they determine the outcome of battle.

The prefix dis- (also di-, dif-) first appeared in English words in the Middle English period in words borrowed from French (usually as the French des-). It comes from the Latin prefix dis-, which is thought to have come from 'duus' two and thus had the most basic sense of 'two ways' hence 'apart.' It was attached to words of non-Latinate origin as early as 1563 (such as the now ungrammatical 'disalike') and became a living, productive prefix (though nearly always combined with Latinate roots) by no later than the mid-1600s. It still is a living, productive prefix, although in a limited capacity (mainly science and noncewords).

DrownedinSound.com or DiS is a UK based music webzine dedicated to new music. DiS started as The Last Resort but was relaunched as Drowned in Sound in 2000. It is run by Sean Adams, designed by Simon Menhinick and programmed by Matthew Willson (with server hosting and support from David Nattriss) with Mike Diver serving as the site's Content Editor, and Alex Denney as Listings Editor / Lead Staff Writer. Key staff writers on the site are Gareth Dobson and Kev Kharas. Dobson is a former editor of the site, who was succeeded by Colin Roberts - now at Big Life Management - and later by Diver.
