For other uses: see DDT (disambiguation). DDT (from its trivial name, Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane) is one of the best known synthetic pesticides. It was originally synthesized in 1874 but its insecticidal properties were not discovered until 1939. In the early years of World War II DDT was used with great effect to combat mosquitoes spreading malaria, typhus, and other insect-borne diseases among both military and civilian populations. The Swiss chemist Paul Hermann Müller of Geigy Pharmaceutical was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1948 "for his discovery of the high efficiency of DDT as a contact poison against several arthropods." After the war, DDT was made available for use as an agricultural insecticide, and soon its production and use skyrocketed.

Le dichlorodiphényltrichloroéthane, couramment appelé DDT est un pesticide moderne. À température et pression normale, il s'agit d'un solide incolore extrêmement hydrophobe avec une légère odeur. Il est insoluble dans l'eau mais se dissout facilement dans la plupart des solvants organiques, des matières grasses et des huiles. Le nom complet du DDT dans la nomenclature est le bis p-chlorophényl-2,2 trichloro-1,1,1 éthane ou encore le 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophényl)éthane.

Dichlordiphenyltrichlorethan, abgekürzt DDT, ist ein Insektizid, das seit Anfang der 1940er-Jahre als Kontakt- und Fraßgift eingesetzt wird. Wegen seiner guten Wirksamkeit gegen Insekten, der geringen Toxizität für Säugetiere und des einfachen Herstellungsverfahrens war es jahrzehntelang das weltweit meistverwendete Insektizid. Allerdings reicherte es sich wegen seiner chemischen Stabilität und guten Fettlöslichkeit im Gewebe von Menschen und Tieren am Ende der Nahrungskette an.

Dichlorodifenylotrichloroetan (DDT, dwuchlorodwufenylotrójchloroetan, 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorofenylo)etan), znany pod nazwą handlową Azotox, Ditox, Tritox - środek owadobójczy otrzymywany przez kondensację chloralu z chlorobenzenem w obecności stężonego kwasu siarkowego. Syntezę DDT przeprowadził po raz pierwszy w 1874 austriacki chemik Othmar Zeidler. Właściwości owadobójcze tego związku odkrył Szwajcar Paul Müller, za co otrzymał Nagrodę Nobla w 1948 r. Wykorzystywany był powszechnie od początku lat 40. do początku lat 60. XX wieku. Na większą skalę zastosowano go w czasie II wojny światowej do ochrony wojsk sprzymierzonych przed tyfusem plamistym roznoszonym przez wszy. Wydawał się wprost idealnym środkiem do ochrony roślin, w latach 60. XX w. stosowany na całym świecie w potężnych ilościach.

Il diclorodifeniltricloroetano o DDT è un solido incolore altamente idrofobico, con un leggero odore di composto aromatico clorurato; è quasi insolubile nell'acqua ma ha una buona solubilità nella maggior parte dei solventi organici, nel grasso e negli olii. Il nome IUPAC esatto è 1,1,1-tricloro-2,2-bis(p-clorofenil)etano, abbreviato in Dicloro-Difenil-Tricloroetano, da cui l'acronimo DDT.
