This article describes a concept from
surveying and
geodesy. Datum is also the last known position of a
submarine in
ASW, the singular form of
data, and a city in ancient Macedonia, probably on the site of the modern
Kavala. A datum (plural datums or data) is a reference from which measurements are made. In
surveying and
geodesy, a datum is a set of reference points on the earth's surface against which position measurements are made, and (often) an associated model of the shape of the earth (
ellipsoid) to define a
geographic coordinate system. Horizontal datums are used for describing a point on the
earth's surface, in
latitude and
longitude or another coordinate system. Vertical datums measure elevations or depths. In
engineering and
drafting, a datum is a reference point, surface, or axis on an object against which measurements are made.

Un datum è un sistema geodetico di riferimento da cui le misure sono effettuate.Il datum utilizzato è un'informazione fondamentale nelle applicazioni GIS (in italiano Sistemi Informativi territoriali) poiché permette di localizzare la cartografia che si sta usando e sovrapporla correttamente con altra cartografia proveniente da diversi soggetti. Un datum è definito dal modello collegato della figura della terra (
ellissoide), centro di emanazione e direzione di orientamento (e forse dal valore delle false origini). Esistono diversi tipi di datum: locali (deviazione della normale nulla ma solo in un area circoscritta), globali (deviazione della normale mai nulla ma valido per tutta la terra), altimetrici. Per passare da un datum ad un altro (passaggio che comporta sempre una certa approssimazione) si applica la trasformazione di Helmert o trasformazione a sette parametri (metodo più usato), oppure le formule di Molodenskj. Ad ogni datum è associata una rete di punti (es: rete IGM95). All'interno di uno stesso datum, per georeferenziare un punto si usano diversi sistemi di coordinate: geografiche ellissoidiche, cartesiane geocentriche, cartesiano euleriane, geodetiche polari, ecc... Il passaggio da un sistema di coordinate ad un altro, avviene tramite metodi analitici e geometrici senza approssimazione.
