Croesus

Croesus (IPA pronunciation: , CREE-sus) (595 BC – c. 546 BC) was the king of Lydia from 560/561 BC until his defeat by the Persians in about 547 BC. The English name Croesus comes from the Latin transliteration of the Greek , in Arabic and Persian قارون, Qârun. Croesus was renowned for his wealth— Pausanias noted his gifts preserved at Delphi— and in Greek and Persian cultures his name became a synonym for a wealthy man; in English, expressions such as "rich as Croesus" or "richer than Croesus" are used to indicate great wealth.

Krösus (griech.  , lat. ; * um 595 v. Chr.; † um 541 v. Chr.) war der letzte König des in Kleinasien gelegenen Lydien. Er regierte von 560 v. Chr. bis 541 v. Chr. und war vor allem für seinen Wohlstand und seine Freigiebigkeit bekannt.

Krezus, Krojsos (ur. ?, zm. 546 p.n.e. lub później) – ostatni król Lidii, kraju na zachodzie Azji Mniejszej. Pochodził z dynastii Mermnadów. Był synem Alyattesa. Objął tron około 560 roku p.n.e.. Był mecenasem poetów, uczonych i filozofów, których chętnie gościł na swoim dworze.Podbił miasta greckie leżące na zachodnim skraju Azji Mniejszej (Jonia), ale sam został podbity przez ich kulturę. Na wschodzie rozszerzył terytorium Lidii do rzeki Halys (obecnie Kizilirmak).Żądny sławy, wszczął w 547 p.n.e. wojnę z królem Persji Cyrusem Wielkim. Pretekstem do jej wypowiedzenia było trzymanie przez Cyrusa w niewoli Astyagesa – ostatniego króla Medów i szwagra Krezusa. W celu przeciwstawienia się Cyrusowi szukał przymierza z Babilonią i Egiptem, ale kraje te niezbyt paliły się do wojny z perskim władcą. W dodatku po stronie Cyrusa opowiedziała się Cylicja, odcinając je od Lidii.
