Greek islands at 8,336 km² (3,219 square miles) and the fifth largest island in the
Mediterranean. Crete is a popular
tourist destination; its attractions include the
Minoan sites of
Knossos and
Phaistos, the classical site of
Gortys, the Venetian castle at
Rethymno, and the
Samaria Gorge, as well as many other natural sites, monuments, and beaches.Crete was the centre of the
Minoan civilization (ca.
2600–
1400 BCE), the oldest
civilization in
Europe.

km² Fläche sowie 1.040
km Küstenlinie die fünftgrößte Insel im
Mittelmeer. Die mit zur Verwaltungsregion Kreta gehörende, vor der kretischen Südwestküste liegende Insel
Gavdos markiert den südlichsten bewohnten Punkt Europas.Kreta hat insgesamt 600.159 Einwohner (Stand 2001). Verwaltungs- und Wirtschaftszentrum Kretas ist
Iraklio, mit ca. 140.000 Einwohnern gleichzeitig die größte Stadt Kretas.
