Crete (; ) is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, and one of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece. It forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own dialect, poetry, and music). Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization , the earliest civilization in Europe, comprising the first palaces in Europe.

Kreta (, Kriti ) ist die größte griechische Insel und mit 8261,183 km² Fläche sowie 1066 km Küstenlinie die fünftgrößte Insel im Mittelmeer. Die Verwaltungsregion Kreta umfasst 8331,231 km² und schließt einige umliegende Inseln mit ein, von denen das vor der kretischen Südküste gelegene Gavdos als einzige bewohnte dieser Inseln den südlichsten bewohnten Punkt Europas markiert.
