County Mayo

County Mayo (, lit. the plain of the yew trees) is a county in the province of Connacht, located on the west coast of Ireland. The county town of Mayo is Castlebar. Mayo is bordered to the south by Galway, to the east by Roscommon, and to the north-east by Sligo.  Castlebar and Ballina are by far the two most populous towns in the county, with 10,729 and 10,146 residents respectively according to the 2006 census; with Castlebar being much larger by land area. These are followed by Westport, a popular tourist town, which has 5,140 residents. The fourth largest town is Claremorris with a population of 3,170. Other towns include Ballinrobe, Ballyhaunis, Belmullet and Swinford.

Das County Mayo (irisch Maigh Eo) liegt im Nordwesten der Republik Irland in der Provinz Connacht. Der Name der Grafschaft (county) leitet sich von einem Kloster ab, das im 7. Jahrhundert von St. Colmán südlich der Ortschaft Balla gegründet wurde. Aus diesem Kloster entwickelte sich im 12. Jahrhundert eine Diözese, die später mit der von Tuam vereinigt wurde. Der irische Name bedeutet soviel wie Ebene der Eiben.

Mayo jest hrabstwem na zachodnim wybrzeżu Irlandii, w prowincji Connacht. Jego stolicą jest Castlebar, największe miasto Mayo.Świątynia Knock znajduje się w pobliżu granicy z hrabstwem Roscommon. W Mayo mieści się również Croagh Patrick, góra, na której Święty Patryk rzekomo modlił się i pościł przez czterdzieści dni i nocy.Najwyższym punktem w hrabstwie (a zarazem w prowincji Connacht) jest Mweelrea (814 metrów). Rzeka Moy na północnym wschodzie jest znana z połowów łososi. Największa wyspa Irlandii, Achill, również jest w hrabstwie Mayo.
