The Counties of Sweden are the first level administrative and political subdivisions of Sweden. Sweden is divided into 21 counties. The counties were established in 1634 on Count Axel Oxenstierna's initiative, superseding the historical provinces of Sweden  to introduce a modern administration. At that time, they were what the translation of län into English literally means; fiefdoms. The county borders often trail the provincial borders, but the Crown often chose to make slight relocations to suit their purposes. There are controversial proposals to divide Sweden into larger regions, replacing the current counties.

Län (schwedisch) ist die Bezeichnung für eine Provinz in Schweden.

La Suède est divisée en 21 comtés (län en suédois). Les comtés regroupent environ 290 communes.

Podział-Szwecja - Szwecja administracyjnie podzielona jest na 21 regionów (szw. län – odpowiednik naszego województwa, zwykle nazywany po polsku regionem, na czele każdego stoi gubernator) i  290 gmin (szw. kommun). Ostatnią nową gminą, która powstała w 2003 roku. jest Knivsta, powstała z odłączenia się od gminy Uppsala.
