Count Basie Orchestra

The Count Basie Orchestra was usually a big band of at least sixteen pieces. Sometimes, as in 1950, it shrank to an eight-piece orchestra. The orchestra, founded by  William "Count" Basie, was really a series of bands that had many members come and go over a span of many years, from 1936 to the time of Basie's death in 1984, and even afterwards, when Frank Foster assumed the leadership of the group that still bore Basie's name. Taken as a whole, the Count Basie Orchestra is usually considered one of the most important big bands of the 20th century.

Biografia Nacque il 21 agosto 1904, a Red Bank, nel New Jersey, USA. Entrambi i suoi genitori erano musicisti. All'inizio si cimentò con la batteria, ma in quello strumento ebbe come rivale un suo amico, Sonny Greer, che poi sarebbe diventato batterista della band di Duke Ellington, così passò al pianoforte, di cui ricevette le prime lezioni da sua madre, pianista. Ebbe contatti con altri pianisti di Harlem, in particolare Fats Waller. Prima dei suoi 20 anni aveva già suonato in circuiti vaudeville come pianista solista, accompagnatore e direttore di musica per cantanti blues, ballerini e attori.

William Basie (Red Bank (New Jersey), 21 augustus 1904 –  Hollywood, 26 april 1984) was een jazzpianist, organist, bandleider en zelfbenoemd "Count of Jazz". William Basie werd geboren in Red Bank in New Jersey. Een aantal jaren toerde Bill Basie in het vaudevillecircuit als solist en begeleider van blueszangers. In 1928 speelde hij bij de Blue Devils van Walter Page om vervolgens pianist te worden bij de Bennie Moten Band in Kansas City, Missouri. Na Motens dood in 1935 werd Basie bandleider en begon hij zich "Count Basie" te noemen. Tegen het einde van 1936 verhuisde hij met de band naar New York, waar het Count Basie Orchestra tot 1950 bleef. Het einde van de populariteit van de big band kwam in zicht, maar Basie vormde in 1952 desalniettemin een zestienkoppig orkest en bleef dat tot zijn dood leiden. Basie bleef trouw aan de Kansas City-jazzstijl en was van belang bij het levend houden van jazz met zijn eigen manier van pianospelen.
