Conservation (genetics)
This article is not about conservation genetics Conservation refers to a high degree of similarity in orthologous DNA sequencesprotein sequences, or protein structures amongst various phyla. A highly conserved protein is often related to an important cellular function. It had been widely believed that mutation in a highly conserved region leads to a non-viable life form, or a form that is eliminated through natural selection. Highly conserved proteins are often required for basic cellular function, stability or reproduction.

Conservation genetics
For molecular conservation in genetics see: conservation (genetics). For the scientific journal Conservation Genetics, see Conservation Genetics (journal). Conservation genetics is a science that aims to apply genetic methods to the maintenance, loss, and restoration of biodiversity. Researchers involved in conservation genetics come from a variety of fields including population geneticsmolecular ecology and biologyevolutionary biology, and systematics. Genetics is one of three levels at which to conserve biodiveristy, the other two being species and ecosystem diveristy (3). In a more general sense, conservation of genetic variability is important to the overall health of populations because decreased genetic variablity leads to extinctions (1). In a specific sense, molecular techniques utilize individuals’ genetics to assess a population and then take adequate steps to fix or reverse the factors that lead to extinction, or reduced biodiversity.
