Conflict of laws
Conflict of laws (or private international law) is a set of procedural rules that determines which legal system and which jurisdiction's applies to a given dispute. The rules typically apply when a legal dispute has a "foreign" element such as a contract agreed to by parties located in different countries, although the "foreign" element also exists in multi-jurisdictional countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Canada.

Droit international privé en France
Le droit international privé est la branche du droit qui étudie le règlement des différents droits privés présentant au moins un caractère d'extranéité, que les parties soient de nationalités différentes, résident dans des pays différents, ou soient liées par des engagements pris dans un pays autre que leur pays de résidence.

Prawo prywatne miedzynarodowe
Prawo międzynarodowe prywatne - zespół norm, których zadaniem jest wskazanie systemu prawnego (własnego lub obcego państwa) właściwego dla dokonania oceny prawnej konkretnej sytuacji z zakresu prawa cywilnego, prawa rodzinnego i prawa pracy. Normy prawa prywatnego międzynarodowego rozstrzygają konflikty na tle powiązań stanu faktycznego z systemami prawnymi różnych państw - stąd ich nazwa - normy kolizyjne.

Internationaal privaatrecht
Het internationaal privaatrecht of IPR is de tak van het recht die in een internationale situatie zal uitmaken welke wetgeving van welk land toepasselijk is, welke rechtbank van welk land bevoegd is, en hoe andere landen die rechterlijke uitspraak eventueel zullen erkennen en uitvoeren.
Als een Nederlandse auto botst met een Belgische auto in Frankrijk, dan zal zeker de Franse verkeerswet gelden, maar misschien ook Belgische of Nederlandse wetten in verband met schade-aansprakelijkheid, verzekering en dergelijke.
Ook in familierecht, inzake nationaliteit, afstamming, huwelijk, erfrecht, kunnen de zaken gecompliceerd worden. Het is best mogelijk dat een Nederlandse rechter een erfenis moet regelen volgens de Turkse wet, of althans voor zover die wet niet in strijd is met de Nederlandse openbare orde. In de familiesfeer zijn er vele internationale verdragen afgesloten in Den Haag, uit hoofde van de Haagse Conferentie voor Internationaal Privaatrecht.
