Colombo (Sinhala: කොළඹ, pronounced ; ) is the largest city of Sri Lanka. It is located on the west coast of the island and adjacent to Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, the capital of Sri Lanka. Colombo is often referred to as the capital of the country, since Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte is a satellite city of Colombo. Colombo is a busy and vibrant city with a mixture of modern life and colonial buildings and ruins and a population of 647,100. The Colombo Metropolitan Region, defined by the districts of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara, has an estimated population of 5,648,000, and covers an area of 3,694.20 km². As per the Provincial Gross Domestic Product-2010, The Western Province, which includes the cities of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara recorded GDP per capita of USD 3,808, the highest recorded GDP per capita for any region in South Asia. It was formerly the political capital of Sri Lanka, before Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte.

Colombo (Sinhala: කොළඹ ) hat Anuradhapura nach über 600 Jahren als Hauptstadt von Sri Lanka abgelöst. Es liegt an der Westküste der Insel auf Höhe des 7. Breiten- und des 80. Längengrades. Die günstige Lage auf einer Halbinsel und ein geschützter Naturhafen machten das ehemals kleine Fischerdorf zu einem begehrten Handelshafen für die Gewürzinsel. Nach der Unabhängigkeit 1948 wurde die Stadt auch politisches Zentrum der Insel.

Colombo est la capitale économique du Sri Lanka (la capitale politique est Sri Jayawardenapura). Son nom provient du nom cinghalais Kola-amba-thota qui signifie : port de la mangue, altéré par les Portugais en l'honneur de Christophe Colomb. La ville compte 377 396 habitants en 2001 pour 2 234 289 dans l'agglomération et c'est la ville la plus peuplée du Sri Lanka, ainsi que le cœur de l'activité commerciale de ce pays.

Namnet Colombo kommer från singalesiskans Kola-amba-thota som betyder "hamn med många bladrika mangoträd".
