Cochlea

The cochlea is the auditory portion of the inner ear. Its core component is the Organ of Corti, the sensory organ of hearing, which is distributed along the partition separating fluid chambers in the coiled tapered tube of the cochlea.The name is from the Latin for snail, which is from the Greek kokhlias "snail, screw," from kokhlos "spiral shell,"(etymology) in reference to its coiled shape; the cochlea is coiled in most mammals, monotremes being the exceptions.

Ślimak (łac. cochlea) - anatomiczna część ucha wewnętrznego ssaków złożony z części kostnej (o kształcie muszli ślimaka) i mieszczącego się w niej przewodu ślimakowego (część błędnika błoniastego), który zawiera receptor słuchu — narząd Cortiego. Przewód ślimakowy kończy się ślepo na wierzchołku ślimaka, jest wypełniony płynem zwanym śródchłonką, czyli endolimfą. Po obu jego stronach biegną przewody zwane schodami przedsionka i schodami bębenka, łączące się na wierzchołku ślimaka, wypełnione przychłonką, czyli perylimfą.

Het slakkenhuis (Medische aanduiding: cochlea) is een tweeënhalf maal opgerold vochtbevattend kanaal (dit vocht noemt men perilymfe indien het gaat over het benige labyrint (labyrinthus osseus) en endolymfe bij het vliezige labyrint (labyrinthus membranaceus)) in het oor met een vorm zoals de naam suggereert. In het slakkenhuis bevinden zich trilhaartjes. De vorm van het slakkenhuis is zo dat bij bepaalde frequenties specifiek de haartjes op een bepaalde plaats in trilling worden gebracht Opeenvolgende gebiedjes corresponderen daarbij met opeenvolgende toonfrequenties. Die principe noemt men ook wel tonotopie. Deze haartjes zijn op hun beurt weer verbonden met zenuwen, die het signaal transporteren naar de hersenen.
